HDSRA NEWSLETTER FEB 2011

Hello HDSRA Referees

To start off, I would like to welcome Leah Furyk, of the Thornton area, to our HDSRA membership. Leah is the first District Youth referee to join our Association. The long term viability of our group depends on younger referees seeing the benefit in belonging to our Association. Well done Leah!

The Season is about to start.

WEBSITE: Due to a technical "glitch" we are in the process of reloading our web site. This is be being done by John Wood as our Web Master. It is the same address www.hdsra.com .

We are will have all the assignments for Huronia to go through this site. It really means just using the Zonkers site that John has used for the last year and getting into the web site. Easy to say, may be harder to do. Be patient.

MEMBERSHIP: Ken Van Dyk of Bradford has come on the Executive as our VP. Good news from a low, two years ago, of 10 members, our membership is now up to 21 at the end of January 2011. A very positive sign. Our volunteer organization depends on members. Not just for membership dues (break even for a balanced budget is 28 members) but also for resources to provide to the clubs of Huronia for training, education and mentoring of our local referees.

If you know of someone who might want to join or should join ... speak to them and get them to sign up. For those under the age of 16 the membership fee is $0.00; 16-18, the fee is $10.00 (less than half of a game fee for an Assistant Referee) and for those over the age of 18, it is $35.00 (less than one game fee).

CONTEST: I challenge each of you to get at least one more referee to join before the end of March. This is a contest and the person who recruits the most will get a HDSRA/OSRA golf shirt. (It will be a random draw if there are equal new members recruited.) We will order one that fits your size so it will take until the end of April to get the shirt. Just make sure that the person signing up mentions your name as their contact. Attached above is the 2011 HDSRA Registration Form.

REFEREE-IN-CHIEF: The Executive of the HDSA has approved our suggestion of John Wood as RIC for 2011. I think that we all agree that John provides excellent service to all the Referees of Huronia in ensuring the games are covered and each of us has an equal opportunity to obtain game assignments beyond the local Club level. This is not the case in many other Districts of Ontario where assignments are not always made fairly. We all need to thank John for his work.

SPRING TRAINING SESSIONS: The DRC, Klaus Baumfeld, is going to the Huronia Clubs to host Spring Education Sessions in the various corners of our District. If you are a Club Head Referee, make sure you take advantage of this valuable resource. The referees will never get better on the field if they do not constantly go back to learn The Laws and how to apply them in a game situation. And we all benefit from discussing the LAWS .... No cost to the clubs, it is paid for by the District.

Right now, our members who have formal OSA or OSRA training as an instructor are John McAlister, Wolter Wagter, John Wood, Eric Frohmann and Chris Cottle. If you have had some formal instructor training (not just for soccer) let us know and you may be added to that list ... it pays well and your mileage over 50 kms is covered.

MENTORING: Ken Van Dyk will be putting together an improved HDSRA Mentoring Program. We can all learn the Laws but it is a different thing to actually apply them on the field of play. This program will be pro-active ... we are no longer going to wait for a club to request our services (that is not happening). This will require manpower ... each of us has more experience than someone else who is just starting. However, you will not be asked to do this service for free. The HDSA has a referee budget to pay for mentoring including travel. Obviously, there is a limit to every budget and the DRC will be authorizing each mentor activity.
We have arranged a morning session of How to Mentor Referees sometime for Saturday, 2 April at the Barrie Soccer Club Development Centre. If you want to mentor you will have to have completed the course. Stay tuned for more information to follow.
EXECUTIVE MEETING: We had the first meeting of the season at the end of January and the next one will be in late March.

OSRA: The OSRA is putting together a business plan (prepared by HDSRA's Chris Cottle) on how it is going to run the Association. We will be adjusting our constitution once the dust settles but it will pretty much be business as usual for HDSRA as we were already doing these things .... we just have to do them better. Our representatives to the OSRA Board of Governors are John Wood and Chris Cottle. The next meeting of the OSRA Board is at the end of February.

You are a member of the HDSRA and the HDSRA is a member of the OSRA.

It is hoped that the OSRA will arrange a Provincial Spring Education Session and have top level referees speak on various aspects of the game. Time and place to be announced.

Do not forget - our strength is in members ... recruit someone to join the HDSRA.
